Ray Brook - The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and the Adirondack Park Agency (APA) are holding joint public comment periods to solicit comments for a proposed amendment to the 1981 Lake George Beach and Battlefield Park Unit Management Plans (UMP). The public is invited to submit input on the draft amendment and its conformance to the Adirondack Park State Land Master Plan. Comments will be accepted until February 19, 2024.
The Lake George Beach and Battlefield Park was established in 1898. The facility is located on Fort George Road, on the south shore of Lake George in the Town of Lake George, Warren County. The site contains numerous ruins, monuments and interpretive features associated with the early history of New York and the United States.
The Lake George Battlefield Park is classified by the Adirondack Park State Land Master Plan as an Intensive Use Day Use Area and is managed by the DEC as a historic site and public park - with an emphasis on the area’s historic value. The site includes picnic areas, monuments, commemorative interpretive features, and walking paths.
This unit management plan amendment seeks to reinter, in Battlefield Park, the remains of Revolutionary War era soldiers which were disinterred in 2019-2020 during excavation on private land for the development of an apartment complex on Courtland Street within the Village of Lake George.
The draft amendment includes the following management alternatives:
- Alternative 1 – No Action;
- Alternative 2 – Reburial near the Courtland Street Site;
- Alternative 3 – Reburial in another nearby State Land Unit;
- Alternative 4 – Earth Contour Enclosed Vault on the Battlefield Park;
- Alternative 5 – Interment in a Grave or Graves on the Battlefield Park;
- Alternative 6 – Mausoleum Structure on the Battlefield Park, and
- Alternative 7 – Low Profile Columbarium Structures (Preferred Alternative).

Unit management plans are required by the Adirondack Park State Land Master Plan for each unit of State land in the Adirondack Park. UMPs integrate the guidelines and criteria of the Adirondack Park State Land Master Plan, related legislation, and resource and visitor use information into a single document.
