Ray Brook, NY - The Adirondack Park Agency (APA) is accepting public comments on Adirondack Park State Land Master Plan conformance for proposed activities to the Eighth Lake, Lake Durant and Limekiln Lake Public Campground Unit Management Plans (UMPs). Public comment should address if the proposed activities conform to the guidelines and criteria of the Adirondack Park State Land Master Plan (APSLMP). The APA will accept public comment until July 8, 2016.
These Public Campgrounds are Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) operated public facilities located on State-owned lands.
The Eighth Lake Public Campground is located off of State Route 28, five miles northeast of the village of Inlet, Hamilton County. The 242-acre campground is situated on the southern shore of Eighth Lake. Campsites are large and well-forested in a remote central Adirondack setting. Sites accommodate tents and up to 40-foot RVs.
Proposed Management Actions Include:
- Install new drinking water distribution system; - Resurface campground roads; - Replace registration booth; - Construct two shower buildings; - Rehabilitate wastewater system; - Construct picnic pavilion; - Rehabilitate Bug Lake trail parking lot; - Improve campsites; and - Plant trees and landscape.
The Lake Durant Public Campground is located in the Town of Indian Lake, Hamilton County. It is two miles south of the Hamlet of Blue Mountain Lake on N.Y.S. Route 28 & 30, and nine miles north of the Hamlet of Indian Lake. The 35 acre campground is situated on the east shore of Lake Durant. Camping equipment from tents to 30-foot RVs are accommodated in a remote central Adirondack setting. Lake Durant Campground offers a variety of recreational opportunities including canoeing, boating, fishing and hiking.
Proposed Management Actions Include: - Construct Shower Building; - Construct Ticket Booth; - Construct Workshop/Garage; - Construct Picnic Pavilion/Rehabilitate Day Use Area; - Rehabilitate Lake Durant Fishing Pier; - Upgrade Electrical System; - Install Utility Sinks; - Monitor Boat Launch Usage; and - Restore 2.5% of Campsites.
The Limekiln Lake Public Campground is located two miles south of the Hamlet of Inlet, Hamilton County. The 312-acre campground is situated on the northern shore of Limekiln Lake off of Limekiln Lake Road. Amenities include 271 tent and trailer sites, flush toilets, hot showers, a sand beach with a swimming area and a bathhouse. Hiking and mountain biking opportunities exist from within the campground and in the local area. The Moose River Plains Wild Forest Area is easily accessible from this campground.
Proposed Management Actions Include: - Replace Comfort Stations #3 and #8; - Construct Two Additional Trailer Dump Stations; - Replace Ticket Booth; - Convert Eight Existing Sites to Universal Campsites; - Rehabilitate Water Distribution System; - Repair Dam Outlet; - Rehabilitate Sewer Lift Station A; - Replace Overhead Power Lines With Underground System; - Restore 2.5% of Campsites; - Monitor Boat Launch Usage; - Plant Trees and Shrubs; and - Replace Picnic Tables and Fireplaces.
Some APSLMP conformance criteria related to these actions include:
- Determining whether proposed activities avoid alterations of wetlands and topography; - Limiting vegetative clearing; preserving the scenic, natural resources of the area; and - Determining whether the plan contains an adequate assessment of actual and projected public use.
The APA will accept public comment on APSLMP conformance for these UMPs until July 8, 2016.
The APSLMP and the UMPs are available for viewing or download from the Adirondack Park Agency website at: www.apa.ny.gov.

UMPs are required by the Adirondack Park State Land Master Plan for each unit of State land in the Adirondack Park. The plans integrate the goals and objectives of the Master Plan, related legislation, and resource and visitor use information into a single document.
The mission of the Adirondack Park Agency is to protect the public and private resources of the Adirondack Park through the exercise of the powers and duties of the Agency as provided by law.
