RAY BROOK, NY The Adirondack Park Agency (APA) is accepting public comment on State Land Master Plan conformance for two unit management plan amendments. The APA will accept written comments on the Bog River Complex and the Cranberry Lake Wild Forest UMP amendments until May 30, 2014.
The Bog River Complex is located in the towns of Colton and Piercefield (St. Lawrence County), Long Lake (Hamilton County), and the Village and Town of Tupper Lake (Franklin County). This management unit includes the: Horseshoe Lake Wild Forest, Hitchins Pond Primitive Area, Lows Lake Primitive Area, and Conifer Easement lands.
The proposed amendments to the Bog River Complex include:
- Designation of a parking area and trail to the summit of Goodman Mountain;
- Formal recognition for the renaming of Goodman Mountain;
- Designation of a parking area and popular unmarked ski and hiking trail along the Bog River known locally as the Otter Point Trail.
The Cranberry Lake Wild Forest is located in St. Lawrence County in the Towns of Fine, Clifton, and Colton.
Proposed amendments to the Cranberry Lake Wild Forest UMP will create two new hiking/skiing connector trails, the Cranberry Lake 50 West and the Cranberry Lake 50 East for trails which loop around Cranberry Lake. Once implemented, these connector trails will provide hikers and skiers with a route to avoid 4 miles of NYS Route 3 which is presently part of the Cranberry Lake 50 trail. This amendment is designed to improve safety and increase the recreational experience. The Cranberry Lake 50 will still include a 1.5 mile section along Route 3 to provide access to community amenities in the hamlet of Cranberry Lake.
